Casmer Jerome Volk, the son of Joseph and Regina (Schneider) Volk was born June 11, 1925 in Rugby, North    Dakota.  He  died at the age of 88 years on Sunday, October 20, 2013 at his home in Rugby. 
                      
                      Casmer  was raised in the rural Fulda,   North Dakota home of his parents  and received his education in the German #4 School near his home.  On November 6, 1944 he was united in marriage  to Elizabeth “Betty” Heintz at St. John’s  Catholic Church in Blumenfeld,   North Dakota.  The couple made their home on the Volk family  homestead, nine miles west and six miles south of Rugby  where they farmed, ranched and raised their eight children.  In 1968, the couple moved to Rugby and purchased the A&W Drive-In which he and  Betty operated until the late 1970’s.   While owning and operating the Drive-In, Casmer also worked at the  Farmers Union Elevator until retiring from there in 1988.  Not being able to “stay at home”, Casmer did  the custodial work for the Rugby Eagles complex until 2011 and helped his  farming friends at harvest time.  Betty  died May 14, 2010. 
                      
                      Casmer  was always a farmer at heart and enjoyed membership in the Little Flower  Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the Rugby Eagles.  He had a passion for fishing, gardening and  dancing. 
                      
                      Survivors  include his children, Duaine (Phyllis) of Ellensburg, Washington, Ronald  (Shirley) of Orion, Illinois, Sharon (Richard) Burckhard of West Fargo, Sheila  (Bruce) Heilman of Gardner, Byron (Patricia) and Mark (Susan) all of Fargo,  Gloria Frost of Valley City, and Joseph (Melody); 24 grandchildren; 36 great  grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; 3 sisters, Regina Binfet of Rugby,  Phillipine Schmidt of Bozeman, Montana and Dorothy Walden of Detroit, Michigan;  many nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.  He was preceded in death by his wife of 65  years, Betty; one sister, Rose Wald; three brothers, Phillip, Peter and John  Volk; and his parents.   
                      
                      Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 25th at the Little Flower Catholic Church in Rugby  with burial in the church cemetery.  Fr. Tom Graner, Celebrant and Fr.   Thanaiah Marneni, Concelebrant 
                      
                      Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday and from  9 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home in Rugby.  There will be no Reviewal in the church. 
                      
                    A rosary and vigil prayer service will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday in the funeral  home.  |
