David Cichos

David C. Cichos the son of Basil “Ben” and Ann (Landscoot) Cichos was born July 16, 1941 in Jamestown, North Dakota.  He died at the age of 78 years on Monday, August 26, 2019 near Chambers, Arizona in route home to Rugby, North Dakota.

David was reared in the Jamestown home of his parent and graduated from St. John’s Academy in Jamestown.  Little known to his parents, siblings and friends, at the age of 15 David joined North Dakota National Guard, being tall and well-built he was able to pull it off.  He retired from the Guard 42 years later with the rank of Command Sergeant Major and was a recipient of the North Dakota Legion of Merit.  He began his career with Otter Tail Power Company in 1961 in Jamestown. David worked in many communities in North Dakota and Minnesota.  He was very active in community and church affairs in all the communities he served.  David served as Mayor of Minnewaukan for 10 years and in Rugby from 1994-2001 and then again in 2010-2014.  While the boys were growing up, David was an Eagle Scout Leader.  He also enjoyed a decades long  membership in the Knights of Columbus, Elks, American Legion, Eagles and was instrumental in organizing the Pierce County Chapter of Ducks Unlimited.  David served on many Board of Directors in various civic organizations and public companies over the years.  In 2001, David retired as regional manager for Otter Tail Power Company, based out of Rugby.

On June 20, 1979 he was united in marriage to Mary (Barton) Engelhart in Carrington, North Dakota.  He loved his family and enjoyed watching them grow into the loving and successful people they are today.  He so looked forward to doing the same with his grand and great-grandchildren.  He was an avid hunter, had a passion for gardening and supplying the communities with produce; the delivery man with the little white bag as he was known.  He made some of the best deer sausage and pickles in the county and shared those too.  David was a man of high integrity and never said no when asked to serve and usually never needed to be asked as he had already volunteered.  Most of all, he was a loving and caring person to all.

Those who were privileged  to know and love him are his wife of 40 years,  Mary; sons Chad (Denise) of Albertville, Minnesota and Joel (Christy) of Devils Lake and daughters, Jacque (Rich) Ziegler and Cindy (Paul) Marturano, all of Chisholm, Minnesota; 9 grandchildren, Ashley, Sierra, Tate, Mia, Makayla, Megan, Lucian, Hunter and Chase; 6 great-grandchildren, Amiyah, Braxton, Layne, Kouver, Emmett and Adalynn; a brother, Steve Cichos of Jamestown; nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.  He was preceded in death by his son, Bradley (2016); brothers, Jerome and Donald; and his parents.

In lieu of flowers, please donate in his memory to the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, ND (1825 46th Street, Mandan, ND 58554) or Gift of Life Transplant House in Rochester, MN. (705 2nd Street SW, Rochester, MN 55902)
